Viewing platforms are some of the most incredible man-made attractions in the world, since they allow visitors to witness the majestic beauty of nature from extremely elevated positions in complete safety. If you are not particularly afraid of heights, then you should definitely consider visiting a few of these astonishingly scary but incredible viewing platforms during your travels. Dachstein Stairway to Nothingness
The incredible Dachstein Stairway to Nothingness can be found in Austria, and it was built in six months by a team of experts who specialize in high-altitude construction projects. Before you reach it, however, you must first enjoy the dizzying experience of crossing Austria’s highest bridge, which soars to 1,300 feet and boasts a length of 328 feet. The cliff face features a total of 14 steps that are encircled by glass walls for uninterrupted views of the surrounding environment. Astonishing, isn’t it?
Tokyo Skytree Observation Decks
As you probably figured out for yourself, the Tokyo Skytree Observation Decks can be found in Japan, and they represent the highest observation decks in the country. The Tokyo Skytree is equally famous for its height, since it can be found at an altitude of no less than 2,080 feet.
As for the decks themselves, one sits at 1,148 feet and features glass floors (scary!), while the second one features a height of 1476 feet and flaunts floor-to-ceiling windows as well as 360-degree views of the city. The famous Mount Fuji, which is the tallest in Japan, can sometimes be seen from the decks if the weather is favorable.
Kinzua Skywalk
The mesmerizingly beautiful Kinzua Gorge can be admired in its entire splendor from the Kinzua Skywalk, which stretches across 624 feet. Visitors can witness the sheer natural beauty of the gorge through glass panels for a truly memorable experience.
AlpspiX Viewing Platform
The AlpspiX viewing platform is one of the most appreciated attractions in Germany, and it can be found at the base of the incredible Alpspitze Mountain. This particular platform is not for the faint of heart, since it features glass panels that offer a frightening but incredibly panoramic view of the valley from an altitude of 3,281 feet.
EdgeWalk CN Tower
Since the CN Tower is known to be the tallest structure in Canada, guests have the rare opportunity of walking around its edge on the fittingly named EdgeWalk. You might not want to look down when you are at an altitude of 1,168 feet, but we all know that you’re going to do it anyway. The EdgeWalk is highly famous, since it is officially recognized as the highest external walk attached to a building.
The Ledge
The Ledge comprises four boxes made using sturdy glass panels, which can be found in the Willis Tower, Chicago. Those who are brave enough to step inside one of these boxes are able to see as far as 50 miles away across the surrounding landscape. Since 2009, it is reported that as much as six million people have stepped inside these boxes, and many of them actually proposed inside.
Cliffwalk
Perched above the Capilano River in British Columbia, Canada, the Cliffwalk is firmly attached to a granite cliff and measures 700 feet. The construction project for this incredible landmark involved drilling massive holes into the stone and using up to 40 tons of steel.
Adventurous types can also choose to walk across the two glass panels implemented into the Cliffwalk.
The View from The Shard
Since most tall buildings feature their own observation decks, the tallest building in London and in Western Europe could not be the exception. The View From The Shard can be found at the 68, 69 and 72 floors of the famed buildings, and the most exceptional views can be seen from floor 72, since the deck is placed at an altitude of 800 feet.
Stegastein Lookout
This is definitely one of the scariest observation decks in the world, since it features a glass panel at the end that tricks visitors into thinking that they could simply fall into the Aurlandsfjord from an altitude of 2,000 feet.
Top of Tyrol Stubai Glacier
We’re going back to Austria to tell you a bit about the Top of Tyrol Stubai Glacier. The platform boasts exquisite panoramas over 103 Austrian mountain peaks, since it can be found at an altitude of no less than 10,433 feet. As you would imagine, the construction process for this incredible platform was quite costly and difficult to finalize, since all its parts had to be lowered on to the site with a helicopter.
Dachstein Glacier Skywalk
The eight glaciers of the Dachstein Glacier in Austria can be observed in full from above at this glass-bottomed walkway. The high altitude promises exquisite views of the surrounding environment, including panoramas of certain forests in the Czech Republic and of the Slovenian Triglav Mountains.
Matteo Thun’s Viewing Platform
Italy is also a great place to visit if you want to admire incredible sights! This particular viewing platform can be found right above the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff, and its unique binocular-looking shape can be attributed to a skilled architect named Matteo Thun.
Grand Canyon Skywalk
Obviously, we had to include the Grand Canyon in our list, since this place offers some of the most breathtakingly beautiful views on the planet. The incredible horseshoe-shaped walkway at the Grand Canyon is actually bolted into the landmark’s rim and stretches 70 feet over its lip. The construction project for the walkway required $30 million to complete, and the first person to walk upon it was none other than astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
