1. Hike to Basilique de Notre-Dame de La Garde – Notre-Dame de La Garde is a Catholic basilica located on a steep hill in Marseille. It sits on the highest point in Marseilles, 162 meters, and the view is magnificent. From the Basilica, there are unrivaled views to the Bay of Marseilles to the west. It is then bordered by hills to the north, east and west. In addition to the views, the architecture of the Basilica is to be admired. It was constructed in 1864 and made from green limestone from the area surrounding Florence. The Basilica can be viewed from everywhere in Marseilles. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can rent a bicycle and ride up to the Basilica.

2. Explore Château d’If – Just three miles to the west of the Port of Marseilles, you’ll see the Château d’If, a fortress located on the small Island of If. The château was built between 1524 and 1531 on the orders of King Francis I. For many years it was used as a prison and became famous when the main character in the novel the “The Count of Monte Cristo” was wrongly mprisoned in it.

3. Visit Museums – Marseille has about 21 wonderful museums to visit including the Museum of Mediterranean Archaeology; Musée Cantini (Museum of Song); the Musée de la Mode (Museum of Fashion); Musée du Vieux Marseille (Museum of Old Marseille); Musée d’Histoire et du Port Antique (Musueum of History and the Antique Port); and Musée des Beaux Arts (Museum of Fine Arts). Every museum offers something different and the buildings are just as remarkable as what’s contained inside of them.

4. Take Pictures at an Inverted Giant Mirror – At the beginning of 2013, the architecture firm Foster + Partners unveiled the Vieux Port Pavilion, a giant mirrored canopy. The Pavilion is 150 feet long and located in Marseille’s World Heritage-listed harbor. It is an integral part of the transformation of the harbor and was widely celebrated when it was unveiled. Wander to the harbor and take photos under the polished mirror service.

5. Dinner at Les Trois Forts – On the top floor of the luxurious Sofitel Hotel is the Michelin-rated restaurant, Les Trois Forts. The restaurant serves Mediterranean food while offering guests remarkable views of the Old Port. If you’re not in the mood for dinner, indulge in drinks and a cigar at the luxurious bar lounge instead.
