One of the many exciting things about traveling is getting to try and discover new cuisines. If you’re heading to Montego Bay,
A family-owned restaurant,
This unassuming restaurant offers a warm and inviting environment for guests, mainly because of its friendly and humble staff who make you feel as if you’re eating a warm meal back at home.
Pelican Grill’s menu has a number of Jamaican home-style dishes. Pictured below is the jerk shrimp rolls appetizer, stuffed with jerk shrimp and vegetables, served on a small salad. The rolls are extra crispy, and the jerk-seasoned shrimp makes this appetizer extra flavorful.
For the main dish, try the Jamaican jerk chicken, made with Pelican Grill’s homemade jerk seasoning that’s a combination of their own scotch bonnet peppers, pimento and other spices brushed with a sweet pineapple and honey-based glaze. The chicken is well seasoned and juicy, with a hint of sweetness.
Another dish to try is the curried lobster, which is made with tender chunks of lobster simmered in a curry sauce.
If you’re a lobster lover, Pelican Grill has a special from July through March where if buy one lobster dinner at a regular price, you can get a second lobster dinner for half price. This special is offered on Tuesdays from 6 to 10 p.m. during those months.
One of the best features about Pelican Grill is its free car service that drives guests to the restaurant and back to their hotels. The service is available from most major hotels in Montego Bay – just ask your hotel to call the restaurant and schedule a pickup.
The second restaurant in Montego Bay is Scotchies, an open-air jerk joint serving affordable, traditional Jamaican food. A popular spot with both locals and tourists, Scotchies cooks its chicken and pork on sweetwood, which is commonly found throughout Jamaica. The pork is cooked on slow heat for four hours, and the chicken for one and a half hours.
The jerk chicken is not heavily marinated with jerk seasoning – instead, it tastes more like baked chicken with a delicious, distinctive woody flavor cooked into every bite.
Scotchies also serves chicken sausage, roast fish (fillet), roast yam, sweet potato, breadfruit, rice and peas, corn, conch soup, shrimp soup and more. Food is served wrapped in foil, and diners can choose to eat in the outdoor seating area or take the food back to their hotel.
