Aston Martin is approaching its 100th anniversary and one of its spectacular model built in 1957 is about to become the most expensive British car ever made. It is the immaculate Aston Martin DBR 1 /2 which is regarded as the single finest car built by Aston Martin. It became famous all over after winning the 1959 Le Mans 24 hour race and became the first and the only British car to do so. The most successful racing car from the Aston Martin stable went on sale recently for an asking price of a staggering £20million.
Most Expensive British Car is Poised to Break the Record by 400{90af24ee0c8b2ef579cdad993725641a0bcc8b6dba22687e081e6e20320a17a5}
It is a green two seater which dominated the motorsport in the late 1950s. It had successfully boosted the image of the carmaker in the sports car segment after a string of successes and particularly after it became the first Aston Martin to take the chequered flag at Le Mans. The experts believe that the price tag is justified and should not surprise anyone. It is a joy to see the well maintained car over 50 years after its great victories on the racing tracks. If a buyer pays the asking price then the previous record of the most expensive British car sold in a public sale will be broken by 400{90af24ee0c8b2ef579cdad993725641a0bcc8b6dba22687e081e6e20320a17a5} as an iconic 1929 Bentley held the record and fetched £5million at auction in June.
The Car is Considered the Holy Grail of Motoring
Talacrest, the Ascot based Ferrari specialists are managing the sale of the iconic car. The present owner had bought the car twenty years ago and Talacrest had managed the purchase for him at the time. The owner has not been named. John Collins, the founder of the agency believes that it is the most famous and valuable Aston Martin in history and is considered the holy grail of motoring. It would find a place in the top five cars in the world and models of theis caliber are rarely available in the open market. One important advantage of the car is that it is road registered and can be driven to the local market for shopping also.
The Car Reached Speeds in Excess of 160mph at Le Mans
Only four DBR 1 were ever made by Aston Martin and it was the second one to be completed and hence the name DBR 1 /2. The first important race it won was the 1957 Spa 1,000km race. Sir Stirling Moss drove it to victories in races for the RAC Tourist Trophy at Goodwood in 1958 and 1959. But it’s most famous triumph achieved in 1959 Le Mans was with Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori behind the wheel. He raced the car at speeds in excess of 160mph.
It Has Been Raced Regularly by Its Owner
Brian Joscelyne, the Aston Martin historian, places this car right at the top in the entire history of the British car maker. This was the car that put an end to Aston Martins ending up second at important races. And he remembers that the victory at Le Mans was achieved in style and was way ahead of the next Ferrari. The car has continued to be raced regularly and has been lucky that it has had good owners who have maintained it really well. The car handles very well and in good, expert hands it slide around corners in spectacular fashion. It is a wonderful all round car and is in fact cheaper than the most expensive car ever sold which is a Ferrari 250GTO which fetched $35million (£22million) earlier this year.
