Hotel d’Inghilterra Roma – Starhotels Collezione today, September 27th, reopens following an extensive refurbishment that included the new facade, rooms and suites, together with the redesign of the common areas such as the bar and famous restaurant Cafè Romano. The property is once again welcoming guests thanks to the work of Italian master craftsmen, that restored the hotel to enhance its historical charm enriched with contemporary luxury and comfort.
Originally built as a private residence for the guests of Palazzo Torlonia, located directly opposite, it has been a favoured home for the international jet-set since its conversion into a hotel in the mid-19th century, due to its superb location, just a few steps from the iconic Spanish Steps and the glamorous Via Condotti, and its innate elegance.
Now, after an extensive restoration of its historic façade, protected by Soprintendenza – the office for the Protection of Historic and Artistic assets, as well as upgrading all guestrooms and suites, the Café Romano Restaurant, and the intimate lounges that for centuries have welcomed artists, writers, and travellers from all over the world, Hotel d’Inghilterra has been restored to its original magnificence.
The project was curated by the Starhotels’ team of designers, with all phases of the work coordinated by Elisabetta Fabri, President and CEO of Starhotels, as an homage to the hotel’s remarkable heritage. This meticulous approach included the preservation of historical architectural elements, as well as the restoration of valuable antique furniture and furnishings. To bring out the hotel’s timeless elegance, the spaces have been reimagined, drawing inspiration from the atmospheres that once captivated travellers during the era of the Grand Tour.
As part of “La Grande Bellezza – The Dream Factory” initiative, Starhotels’ patronage project to promote high Italian craftsmanship, Italian master craftsmen contributed to the hotel restoration. This collaboration has imbued the hotel with a renewed, authentic grandeur seamlessly integrating touches of Made in Italy design.
Like an inviting private residence, the rooms and suites – reduced from 84 to 80 to provide more space for luxurious interiors – boast their own distinct character and design. The furnishings combine finely restored antique pieces from the hotel’s collection with creations of contemporary high craftsmanship, giving the hotel a renewed sense of authenticity.
The renowned Café Romano Restaurant, expanded and transformed into a true Roman lounge for convivial moments, will also unveil a refreshed gastronomic experience in the coming weeks. Hotel d’Inghilterra will soon present an intimate and unique spa, ideal for a relaxing retreat in Rome, and an exclusive rooftop terrace, providing a privileged view of the Eternal City.
The history of the Hotel d’Inghilterra
The Hotel d’Inghilterra traces its roots back to the mid-16th century, when it was used as a noble residence for the guests of Palazzo Torlonia, located directly opposite. As early as the 15th century, this area was renowned for the best hotels in the city, attracting visitors from all over the world. In 1845, the guest residence of Palazzo Torlonia was converted into a hotel named Hotel d’Angleterre, due to its popularity among British visitors. The logo itself, inspired by the coat of arms of the English royal family, proves the deep historical ties with England and the Windsor crown.
Among the hotel’s illustrious guests were the Romantic English poet John Keats, who spent the last years of his life here, and his compatriots Byron and Shelley, but later also Henry James, Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, and Ernest Hemingway from the mid-nineteenth century to La Dolce Vita years.
