Bill Gates buys Portofino Castle in Italy – CPP-LUXURY

Bill Gates has bought Villa San Giorgio, known as Portofino Castle, a famed landmark in the chic Ligurian Riviera resort, local newspaper Il Secolo XIX reported Wednesday. Some sources indicate the property will be converted into an ultra luxury hotel.

Gates, 67, the world’s fourth-richest man, bought the property, whose original name is Vila San Giorgio, through his Four Seasons Hotels real-estate company, which he bought from Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal for $2.2 billion in 2021.

The 1,200 sq m property is split today into 12 mini-apartments with a private lift that goes down to the beach below the castle. The villa is said to have cost Gates 50-60 million dollars. He bought it from a Genoese insurance company

While Four Seasons Hotels only operates most of its properties (without owning them) there seems to be a strategy change for exceptional properties. Last year, Gates bought the majority stake in a property which will house the future Four Seasons Rome.
