Luxury brands are constantly striving to provide high quality products. And to ensure that, they have been investing in businesses that they depend on for their raw materials.

The latest development in the fashion industry is French fashion house Chanel’s acquisition of the Bodin-Joyeux tannery in Levrous, France. With this, they propose to ensure the future supply and quality of the leather they use.

A Brief History

The tannery, which was established in 1860, specialises in fellmongery – the process of fur removal from hides before they are tanned – parchments and colour dying.

While Chanel has purchased the company, the tannery will continue to provide for other clients as well. Currently, it produces 450,000 skins a year.

Apart from this latest acquirement, Chanel also owns Scottish cashmere-maker Barrie Knitwear, the Lesage couture embroiderers and flower farms that grow the raw materials for their Chanel No 5 perfume.

It just so happens that other luxury brands such as Gucci, Hermès and LVMH too, are investing in the luxury materials industry in an effort to make the supply chain better and to guarantee the supply of quality resources. While Hermès owns multiple tanneries including a reptile farm, LVMH is the owner of a crocodile skin tannery in Singapore.

Let’s hope that age-old craftsmanship is retained as luxury brands strive to protect them.
