Founded in 1991 by designer Nicky Zimmermann, who was eventually joined by sister Simone Zimmermann, the Sydney-based company has since gone leaps and bounds. The growing demand for Zimmermann‘s ultra feminine designs not only resulted in a series of mono-brand boutiques in key around the world. With a new American investor on board as of last month, the high-end womenswear brand is poised to further expand and overhaul its retail network in the near future.
For its latest venture, Zimmermann has shifted its retail focus back Down Under to revamp and expand its boutique in downtown Melbourne. Situated on Level 2 of Melbourne Emporium, an upscale shopping centre on Lonsdale Street, the boutique has been present on the premises since the latter first opened its doors in 2014.
At 300 sqm. (3,229 sq.ft.), the retail space is now Zimmermann‘s largest in the country, featuring a homey yet sophisticated interior design by studio mcqualter, an interior design practice and longtime collaborator based in Sydney and Melbourne. The store sees a series of rooms, each featuring a distinctly designed setting, and connecting with a large central room, or living room, if you will, evoking the sense of a private apartment.
Zimmermann newly renovated store in Melbourne
While the terrazzo flooring, whitewashed walls and chunky metal sales counter have been retained, all else has changed, resulting in, as said, a more welcoming and alluring retail space thanks to the introduction of a series of more ornate and eclectic choice of furnishings and a varied colour palette.
The centrepiece of the store is an eclectic room which features Zimmermann‘s shoe and jewellery collection amidst a setting adorned by an Art Deco-inspired chandelier, dangling from a colourful striped lowered ceiling, paired with a modern wall-mounted grid shelving unit and two elegant French Empire-style chairs, and last but not least, a monolithic wooden display with glass top.
